Abstract

Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs) are the backbone of developing countries, generating significant employment, innovation, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Despite their potential to grow, they are resource-scarce, locked-out-of the market, and demonstrate low efficiency. Digital transformation (DT) is the focal point during a phase when the remedies are implemented, through which creating good oil for competitiveness and stimulate sustainable development. This research summarized empirical evidence and established the impacts of DT on SME economic performance in emerging countries. Based on a thorough synthesis of recent research papers from institutions and universities, empirical critical contribution of this research is the strong positive relationships between DT and economic indicators like sales increase, business process efficiency, and new markets development. In very broad terms, a 10% enhancement of digitization will generate a 1.35% general increase in GDP per capita for developing countries. Dynamic capability theory has been adopted to demonstrate that implementation of digitization enables firms to sound off their sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring capability to adapt to a turbulent environment. Among the major figures, the effects of fully fitted firmware for reporting revenue increase are 10%. The paper points out the major barriers to implementation, which could include lack of digital skills and high investments needed during the founding phase. In summary, the paper concludes with recommendations for policy actions for stimulating an inclusive digital framework to guarantee the maximum economic returns of DT for SMEs in emerging countries.
