Demographic Profile of Union Territory of Ladakh

Abstract

This paper looks at changes in the demographic composition of Union Territory of Ladakh over last three decades. Ladakh comprises of two districts namely, Leh district and Kargil district. The demographic composition includes the place of residence (rural and urban), sex ratio, literacy rate, workforce participation rate and occupation pattern. The successive Census reports show more than two-thirds of population of Ladakh lives in rural areas. The sex ratio is found one the lowest in the country and continuously declining during the study period. The Census reports also show an impressive increase in the literacy rate over the years. The workforce participation rate is declined over the last three decades and a shift from the traditional sector i.e. agriculture to non-traditional sector i.e. service sector. The paper is completely based on secondary data that is Census of India.
