Abstract

This study examines the forms of academic pressure in Indonesian higher education institutions in their efforts to achieve World-Class University (WCU) status. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, the findings reveal six main forms of pressure experienced by lecturers: teaching demands, funding constraints, administrative workload, community service obligations, academic career requirements, and publication expectations. These pressures arise as consequences of government policies, international ranking targets, and internal institutional strategies. Although they create workload and psychological burdens, academic pressure also triggers positive changes, including the enhancement of lecturers’ hard and soft skills, increased research productivity, and the expansion of academic networks. Support in the form of funding, incentives, mentoring, and international collaboration plays an important role in transforming pressure into constructive motivation. As a result, lecturers’ performance in the three pillars of higher education (tridharma) improves, institutional reputation strengthens, and students benefit through enhanced competence and confidence. Therefore, academic pressure can serve as a catalyst for positive transformation when properly managed through systemic support and lecturers’ intrinsic motivation.
