About the Journal

The British Journal of Applied Linguistics is a peer-reviewed international open access journal focussing on all areas of applied linguistics. It is particularly interested in manuscripts reporting on studies that apply a multidisciplinary approach to research on second language acquisition, pragmatics, language learner identity, code-switching, language teaching methods, language change, language policy, language teacher education, approaches to language teaching and learning, the use of technology in language teaching and learning, theories of second language acquisition, cognitive and social aspects of language learning, and other relevant areas of research.  The journal publishes reports of empirical studies, critical position papers and ground-breaking theoretical articles.

Focus and Scope

British Journal of Applied Linguistics publishes original papers, review papers, case studies, conference reports, academic exchanges, conceptual framework, empirical research, technical notes, and book reviews in the fields of applied linguistics. Papers accepted for publication are strictly selected on the basis of scientific quality and scholarly standing.

Publication Frequency

One of the benefits of Open Access publishing is that articles can be published within days of having been accepted rather than having to wait for open space in an upcoming issue of the journal. That is the model the journal employs. Once an article is accepted for publication, the files will be typeset. There will then be an opportunity to proof the final PDF before the publication is released. This process should take between one and two weeks.

Articles published in the journal will be added to the current volume and only one volume will be published per year. There are no separate issues of the journal within this volume, however, article collections can be collated and displayed separately from the open volume, allowing conference proceedings, themed series etc to be published in a clearly identifiable way.

Types of Contributions

Authors should consider their chosen article type carefully; the journal accepts the following types of contributions: research articles, review articles and book reviews.

Conflict of Interest

Conflicts of interest may exist when professional judgements concerning a primary interest have the possibility of being influenced by a secondary interest (e.g.: financial gains). It is to be noted that even perceptions of conflicts of interest are as important as the actual conflicts of interest. Any agreements with study sponsors (for-profit or non-profit), which interfere with the authors’ access to the study data, ability to analyse or interpret the data and publish manuscripts independently according to their own decision, should be avoided by authors at all costs. A declaration of interest for all authors must be received before an article can be reviewed and accepted for publication.
